Interview
Q. Hi Polyc! Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I’m tattooist Polyc. I work on art and tattoo designs
that express three-dimensional images in space with
polygonal shapes.
Q. Tell us about your designs in the IMPRINTU
collaboration.
I selected pieces that work well as first-time tattoos. My
work on the IMPRINTU App includes easily-wearable and
well-received designs. I’d suggest wearing
them as casual statement pieces on special
occasions.
Q. Can you tell us about your decision to
collaborate with IMPRINTU?
There are actually a lot of people who can’t
get a tattoo because of the pain. I thought that
IMPRINTU would provide an opportunity for
this group of people to more easily experience
tattoos.
Q. Why did you want to become a tattooist?
While majoring in art, I began to wonder what it
would be like to etch my art onto my body and
thought I’d feel happy to see my work tattooed
on other people. That was the beginning.
Q. Can you tell us about your first tattoo?
It felt like a lot of pressure to begin tattooing someone else
when I was first starting out, so I told myself that I would
successfully tattoo my own leg before beginning to work
on anyone else. My first tattoo from that time is a cat, and
it’s currently on my ankle.
Q. What was your most memorable work?
There are so many, but one that stands out is a client who
came in for a cover-up. After we were done, the client cried
a lot, saying “I think I can finally be unashamed with my
parents now.” Since then, I have come to think that being a
tattooist is a job that can heal someone’s heartache.
Q. Do you have any fun episodes from work?
I’d like to pick the time I tattooed the entire members of
BTS. The members who were getting tattoos for the first
time were very scared. The tattoo itself took less than five
minutes, but one member took two hours selecting his
placement. It was endearing to see a world star being so
careful in front of tattoos.
Q. Your tattoos are widely loved as single-statement
pieces. Why do you think that is?
I put a lot of thought into a color and composition. In other
words, I think a lot about how a design based on three-dimensional
art will be represented when placed on
someone’s skin.
Q. Where do you get your inspiration?
For tattoo designs, I start by observing regular objects
from a wide variety of different perspectives. Through this
process, I create my signature Polyc designs.
Q. What do you hope to see from IMPRINTU?
I hope that IMPRINTU can help tattoos become more
approachable to a wider audience of people. I myself hope
to contribute in helping tattoos become established as a
more commonly accepted form and genre of art.
